Chapter 14

The Smug Shadowcat

I awoke the following morning to the early sun streaming in through the window. A robin raced through the air and landed deftly on the sill, glancing around curiously before taking off into the cool, early morning air.

Rosalind wasn’t next to me, but the scent of bacon, sausages and eggs frying downstairs told me she was already up.

What a woman.

I pulled on my clothes and crossed to the window, looking out over the yard giving onto the empty field.

A low mist had settled upon the field in the morning cold, but when the springs heated up later it would be swapped out for steam.

Even better, the gloomers had vanished from the land.

I headed downstairs and found the heavenly sight of Rosalind by the stove. Just as I arrived she spun around with a fresh cup of tea in one hand and a plate laden with a full breakfast in the other, steam swimming on the air above courtesy of the hash browns in the center.

‘Breakfast?’

‘Definitely.’

‘Good – you’re right on time.’

She set the plate down on the table alongside the steaming cup of tea. A few helpings of both put me practically back in the same heaven that I had experienced last night with her.

Rosalind leaned against the counter and eyed me.

‘I like spending time with you,’ she smiled, nursing her cup of tea. ‘When are you coming around again?’

‘Whenever you want.’

‘Good,’ she smiled, crossing to me and kissing me gently. ‘Don’t be too long.’

‘That’s one promise I can make to you. Mind if I take this with me?’

‘Be my guest.’

I downed the tea and stepped out with the plate and the fork in my hand. Rosalind and I kissed passionately in the doorway, the scent of her delicate perfume striking me just right.

‘I’ll see you later, Guard Leo.’

With a wink she closed the door, leaving me to head back to the road.

My head was still swimming as I reached the cobbled road leading back to Felgarde.

What a world.

I finished off my breakfast on the way, hopped the fence into the backyard and approached the back door.

It was only then that I remembered:

Zyak.

I told him that I would let him in when I got back last night, but I hadn’t returned.

Shit.

I searched the backyard for any sign of Zyak and checked the door. Locked. I headed out the back gate to the nearby patch of forest and looked around for any sign of him.

‘Zyak? Are you here?’

There was no sign of him, but a more unfamiliar sound emerged from the street running through Felgarde, one much different from the usual chatter and footsteps of the locals and passers-by.

I headed inside the house, unlocked the front door and stepped onto the street in search of the source of the sound.

And I damn well found it.

‘Oh, he’s lovely, isn’t he?’

‘Strange to see such a majestic creature in these parts.’

‘He’s very well-behaved.’

‘I wonder who he belongs to?’

It wasn’t a dog or a wolf or even a prized goat.

It was a shadowcat, and one that I recognized very well.
